PALIMPSEST

Digital works placed over existing museum and cultural environments through augmented reality: another image occupying the same space without physically replacing the first.

Project

One space, two layers.

The project used augmented reality to place digital works inside iconic cultural spaces. The intervention existed through the visitor’s phone: the physical room remained unchanged while a second exhibition layer appeared on screen.

The project expanded across nine countries and ten spaces. Selected interventions included The Louvre in Paris, Tate Modern in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Uffizi in Florence.

The Russian pilot attracted more than 16,000 viewers in its first month without paid advertising.

Palimpsest sits alongside the graphic work as another way of taking an existing system — the museum, the advertisement, the product label — and changing what the system appears to say.
