Big Brother: From Surveillance to Indifference

How the Big Brother series reverses the familiar idea of constant observation and replaces it with distance, absence and neglect.

The expected threat

Big Brother usually names a system that watches too closely. The series starts from that familiar image of observation and control, then removes its basic promise: attention.

A three-part sequence

The repeated face, red field and cable-like line create one visual system across the works. The sentences shift from not being heard, to not being seen, and finally to not being cared about. Each step increases the distance between the individual and the system.

Indifference instead of omniscience

The reversal changes the anxiety. The problem is no longer only that a system knows too much. A system can be present, powerful and visible while remaining indifferent to the person inside it.

Repetition as structure

Because the visual language barely changes, the text becomes the moving part of the series. The works are designed to operate together as a sequence rather than as three unrelated images.
