How to Build a Gallery Wall With Graphic Art

A gallery wall works when the spacing and hierarchy are consistent, not when every frame matches.

Choose one anchor work

Start with the piece that should be noticed first. It can be the largest work, the darkest image or simply the one you care about most. Place everything else in relation to that anchor rather than treating every print as equal.

Keep one spacing system

Frames can differ, but inconsistent gaps quickly make a wall feel accidental. Choose a gap and repeat it. Small differences are less distracting when the edges still form a clear overall shape.

Mix orientation deliberately

Portrait and landscape works create useful tension. Grouping only one orientation can become rigid. Use the long edge of one work to answer the short edge of another, and check the arrangement as a single silhouette.

Lay it out on the floor first

Before drilling, place the works on the floor with the same approximate gaps you want on the wall. Photograph the arrangement. The photo makes imbalances easier to see than standing directly over the frames.

Add slowly

A gallery wall does not need to be completed in one purchase. Leave positions that can accept future works. A structure that can grow is usually more useful than a perfectly filled rectangle on day one.
