Open Edition vs Limited Edition Prints

The difference is not print quality by default; it is the rule governing how many copies can exist.

Open edition

An open edition has no predetermined maximum number of copies. It can remain available as long as the artist or publisher chooses to produce it. That makes it suitable for an accessible print shop and for works intended to circulate widely.

Limited edition

A limited edition sets a maximum quantity in advance. Once that quantity is reached, that edition should not be reprinted in the same form. The edition number is therefore part of the object’s specification, not decoration.

Quality is a separate question

A limited edition can be badly printed and an open edition can be beautifully produced. Paper, inks, colour management, resolution and quality control determine print quality. Edition size determines scarcity.

What to check on a product page

Look for the edition type, paper, dimensions, whether a border is included and whether the work is signed or accompanied by a certificate. If the page does not claim a limited edition, do not assume one.

How this shop labels editions

Product pages should state the edition model explicitly. Standard POD art prints are open edition unless a product is clearly marked otherwise. Limited releases, when offered, are separated and documented.
