Private Label: When Retail Language Becomes the Artwork

A note on packaging, promotional graphics, instruction and the commercial visual language behind the Private Label series.

A ready-made visual authority

Private Label begins with systems that already know how to command attention: packaging, labels, discount graphics, instructions and advertising. They arrive with their own hierarchy, urgency and promise of certainty. The series keeps that authority intact while changing what it is asked to communicate.

Private conditions as products

Compromise, obedience, aspiration and self-image are presented with the graphic confidence normally reserved for ordinary goods. A feeling can be canned, an ideal can be discounted, and a personal decision can look like a product specification.

Why the commercial surface matters

The retail language is not decoration placed around the work. It is part of the subject. Commerce does not only sell objects; it also supplies forms through which value, success and normality are described. The series uses those forms as artistic material.

The repeated contradiction

The images remain readable as posters and product-like graphics at first glance, but the sentence carried by the format interrupts that reading. The work depends on the gap between a familiar commercial surface and a message that does not behave like conventional advertising.
